Women In Film

An Analysis on Archetypes seen in Western Film

The Women in Film project aims to question and analyze the effect of the one dimensional portrayal of women in film and the impact it has on how we perceive women in real life. If movies and television act as a representation of reality then the repetition of these characters allude to the common perception that women can only be what is seen on screen. Intentionally and not our absorption of the silver screen bleeds into how we understand each other. In this series I have asked women in my life, who I have had the pleasure to learn in depth their complex and contradictory personalities, to describe themselves as both a preserved archetype closely relating to modern film as well as the stark contrast of who they are in reality. Like the actresses themselves each one puts on a show for you, acting out the role cast upon them by 21st century society. Yet beneath the unintentional act there lies the real women. The women that aren't describable with character or relatability because each of us is individual. So please enjoy the women in film, but more importantly who they might actually be played by.
